The MMF5.1SE is now shipping with Music Hall's Mojo cartridge. It's pictured here with an older Goldring model. The Mojo is a moving-magnet cartridge built by Ortofon with an FG 70 line-contact stylus. Specs are listed below.
The Music Hall MMF 5.1SE is a follow up to the best-selling MMF 5, a “Recommended Component” in Stereophile Magazine, as well as an “Editor’s Choice” award winner in The Absolute Sound. This “Special Edition” of the 5.1 retains many of the same components and concepts, while adding a few significant tweaks.
The basic design of the table remains the same: A two-speed, belt driven turntable with a dual plinth, Teflon coated noise-free main bearing, and an isolated asynchronous motor, with all-manual operation. This update simply focuses on isolating the core components of the table even further, both from each other and from the environment.
Most significantly, the MMF 5.1 now uses the Pro-Ject 9 arm, the same arm that was used on the MMF 7. Made from a single piece of aluminum, this arm boasts high-rigidity, with the rear stub slightly lowered, matching the de-coupled counterweight’s center of gravity to that of the stylus tip. The wire inside the arm has also been replaced with a higher grade of copper.
The glass platter has been removed in favor of an alloy platter, weighing half as much with stronger dampening properties. To isolate the platter further, Music Hall added a set of adjustable vibration-dampening feet. Gone are the integrated RCA cables, and in their place is a junction box, allowing you to use your own interconnects. A quality set of RCA cables is still included in the box.
All of the 5.1 features mentioned remain the same in the 5.1SE, with some interesting additions: The viso-elastic cones between plinths are replaced with a sorbothane gel, and the cartridge has been upgraded to the Ortofon Mojo MM cartridge, only available from Music Hall. The top plinth has a walnut veneer top with a rosewood varnish, a stylish finish to an already exceptional turntable.
