Ortofon 2M Black Phono Cartridge
Product Review:
Partnered with the budget priced Audio-Technica PE-Q3 phono preamp, the "ridiculously good" Ortofon 2M Black produced a bright, open sound with "surprising heft and slam." Because its Shibata stylus is sensitive to rake angle, the 2M Black should be used only with tonearms that permit adjustments of VTA and SRA.

The Ortofon 2M Black is quite possibly the best moving magnet cartridge on the planet. With a nude Shibata diamond, it retrieves information from the groove effortlessly, and flawlessly. The 2M Black is easy to recommend for music lovers of all types.

"Ridiculously good." - Michael Fremer
The 2M Black is the new moving magnet flagship from Ortofon. The 2M black is graced with a Shibata diamond stylus – the same diamond as on the acclaimed MC Jubilee. Its slim, highly polished profile allows an exceedingly wide contact area to the groove walls and ensures notably detailed reproduction throughout the spectrum, including even the most high frequency groove information. Users of the 2M Black will enjoy the benefit of impeccable sound quality, along with reduced record & stylus wear and reduced distortion and phase error as a result of the diamond’s improved tracking geometry.

The cartridge body used for the 2M Black is manufactured from a newly-developed Lexan DMX Piano Black, a revolutionary material which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances. The 2M Black uses a special upgraded engine, featuring split pole pins with a silver plated copper wire.

Orofon's Unique 2M Design
The Ortofon 2M magnetic cartridge system is designed and developed for high performance reproduction of your favorite analogue records.Ortofon has developed magnetic cartridges in various designs for many types of record players, tone arms and for special purposes throughout the last 40 years. And now - as we approach Ortofon´s 90 years Company Anniversary - we decided to combine our expertise and latest technology in the development of this outstanding cartridge design. As a result of reviewer listening tests we feel confident that you will appreciate and enjoy the unique qualities of these cartridges.

2M is developed together with the Danish designer "MøllerJensen Design" from Copenhagen, Denmark - the same designer who designed the award winning cartridge MC Jubilee and the Kontrapunkt series. The inspiration for designing the 2M was related to the facets of the diamond - elegantly concentrating its contours against the grooves on the record surface. The name 2M was selected among several ideas. We wanted a modernname which should be easy to pronounce and to remember, and therefore an alpha numerical name was chosen. 2M means MM, which is the abbreviation for moving magnet. We are using the same names on our 2M series as we use at our Rondo series: Red, Blue and Bronze. The 2M Black will become the flagship of 2M. 2M was the last product of our former chief engineer Per Windfield. He has worked with the 2M for the last two years.

The 2M Technology
2M are designed for precise and accurate retrieval of the information in the record groove. Our philosophy is to play the record sound as accurate as possible, without coloring the sound. We have optimized the design for ease of mounting the cartridge, weight and size to fit the most common turntables at the market today. All of the 2M cartridges feature diamonds which are polished to the highest standards in the industry. The 2M Red features a tipped elliptical diamond, while the 2M Blue features a nude elliptical diamond.

The 2M Bronze features a nude Fine Line diamond stylus, which is particularly suited for demanding applications. The slim profile of the Fine Line stylus will track even the highest frequency information, making it a must for discerning listeners. Additionally, its larger footprint ensures reduced distortion and record wear. The 2M Black is the new moving magnet flagship from Ortofon. The 2M black is graced with a Shibata diamond stylus - the same diamond as on the acclaimed MC Jubilee. Its slim, highly polished profile allows an exceedingly wide contact area to the groove walls and ensures notably detailed reproduction throughout the spectrum, including even the most high frequency groove information. The 2M series has interchangeable stylus units and replacement stylus is available.

To obtain a flat frequency response as with a Moving Coil cartridge we are using the slit pole pins to reduce the eddy current. The slit pole pins is an Ortofon invention which was presented in the 500 series and the Super OM series. The 2M Red and 2M Blue both have the same engine with slit pole pins. With this improved engine we have been able to increase to output to 5,5 mV. The cartridge body used for the 2M Bronze and 2M Black is manufactured from a newly-developed Noryl plastic/glass combination, a revolutionary material which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances. The 2M Bronze and 2M Black use a special upgraded engine, featuring split pole pins with a silver plated copper wire.

Absolute Sound An Heir to The Shure? By Neil Gader, June/July 2008

The 2M Black (and to a lesser degree, the Red) may have been born a moving magnet, but its performance is not so easily typecast. Overall, it’s the balance of the Black that carries the day. It’s neither dark nor slow off the mark. Yet like the Shure it doesn’t go in for extremes. It has a lighter touch and certainly a faster one. It has a more resolved character irrespective of frequency. And the V15 on its best day never reproduced a suondstage with such precision and dimension.

The Black’s greatest attribute, however, was how it provided a more transparent window into the world of micro-energies-all the tiny things we listen for which coalesce to create the inner life of a great recording.

In a market where moving coils get most of the buzz, the 2M Black is a superb performer and value. It deserves to garner the attention of bereaved V15 aficionados and make converts of the more curious moving-coil devotees.

SoundStage.com Ortofon 2M Black Phono Cartridge By John Crossett, June 2008
"A stately, deliberate, precise, and slightly forward sound that never came close to crossing the line to slow, plodding, sluggish, or reserved." "One of the Black’s bona fide strengths was its way with tone and timbre," which led to "a full, rich re-creation of three-dimensional instruments." "Soundstaging was superb, the 2M Black handling instrumental separation very well." "It doesn't match the sheer resolving power of the best moving coils," and it "fails to shine its light into the rear corners [of the soundstage] as well as I would have liked," but "the list of strengths far outweighed that of weaknesses."

"All in all, the Black is well-thought-out design with some top-notch features usually found on cartridges costing far, far more."

Hi-Fi World Ortofon’s brand new 2M Bronze and Black Moving magnet cartridges sound very different to one another, and indeed to the other 2ms, finds Noel Keywood
“the 2M Black is masterful design for anyone keen to get the best from LP…”

Needle Doctor Ortofon 2M Black By Matt Randall, May 2010
Putting the Ortofon 2M Black into my system yielded immediate improvement over the Audio Technica AT12S that I had in their previously. While both cartridges sport a nude shibata stylus, the 2M produced significantly lower noise in the groove, and more space in the sound stage. Resolution is crystal clear with great snap on drums. Even music as purposefully distorted as Metallica had a greater sense of musicality to it. Ulrich's cymbals and toms snapped high above the guitar work while his kick thumped out a beat from the depths of the room. Vocal's are treated equally well without a hint of harshness. In fact, sibilants that were not even hard to begin with still sounded more natural out of the 2M Black than with the AT. Easily worth the upgrade when compared to the 2M Bronze, which while similar did not leave me with the same feeling of 'wow'.'

Vinyl Asylum Ortofon 2M Black – My last MM By HenryH, Febuary 2008
Well, yes, the subject line says it all. This is one fine cartridge MM or MC or whatever. The Shibata stylus gives me the best, most open, transparent and extended top end of any cartridge I've ever owned. Comparing it to my reference Dyna 20XL, I give the Dyna a subtle edge in the bass and midrange, but the Black pulls away on top. It is detailed without the sterility and lack of "soul" I heard from my OC9. The top end simply shimmers. Brushed cymbals have that harmonic sheen that few carts can accurately capture and most simply smear.

And the Ortofon is nimble, like the Dyna. It wants to boogie when the music calls for it and is laid back when that is called for. It's a good tracker, too. No signs of mistracking at 1.6 g VTF.

At the end of the day this cart is worth every penny put into it and I agree with The Absolute Sound in that this is more than likely the spiritual heir to the venerable (and very much missed) Shure V15 series cart. If you can afford it, get it!
