The Pro-Ject Tube Box II sets the sonic standard for an entry-level tube phono stage. This product is built using the same high-grade metal chassis shared with the rest of the Mk II product line. This all metal case features great shielding from both vibration and electromagnetic interference. Selectable MM and MC modes as well as a sub-sonic filter via rear panel mounted switches. Gain is rated at 60dB (MC) and is derived by a pair of graded ECC83 (12AX7A) tubes.
This thing is awesome. The preamp market is cluttered with products in this price range, but the Pro-Ject Tube Box II's MM/MC flexibility along with, of course, it's pair of 12AX7s, set it apart. It doesn't just offer features, however. It sounds much better than its price indicates. It's simply exciting to listen to. Once you plug it in and get the tubes warmed up, you won't be able to stop listening.
Needle Dr reviews the Pro-Ject TubeBox II The aim of a good phono preamp should be to maintain the integrity of the recording, while engaging the listener with nuance and detail. The Pro-Ject Tube Box II does all this, and more. With a 12AX7 tube in each channel, stereo separation is both accurate and exciting. Apart from sounding great, the Tube Box II is also incredibly flexible. With the capability of handling both high and low output cartridges via a switch in the back, it's ready for just about any cartridge you want to throw at it. In listening, you'd guess that the Tube Box II is twice it's price. Highly recommended.
