The Virtuoso Ebony

It was back in 1978 that Clearaudio first manufactured moving coil cartridges. This vast experience has been a significant benefit to our range of moving magnet cartridges. We have made massive improvements in areas such as mass-reduction, the profile, polish and finish of the stylus and in the damping of the cantilever.

Strict attention to construction methods along with extensive quality controls and hand-selection processes form part of the procedure for this stunning quality. We can assure you of flawless quality in all areas to guarantee exceptional linearity and trackability.

    Cart Collector

Highly underrated cart. I prefer this to the higher end and more detailed CA Maestro, which I also own and love but for different reasons. The Virtuoso is all about beautiful midrange. It's a warm cart but doesn't sacrifice top end or sound any less detailed. To my ear, there's a slight dip around 2800 hz that makes listening at higher volumes a little easier on the ears. It's not the greatest tracker and makes some albums - dense digital to vinyl pressings especially - a little tough to get through. But, for what it gives up on tracking and resolution it makes up in the wonderful midrange. I have quite a few higher end MM carts from CA, Grado, Shure, AT, etc., - I've never owned the Ortofon 2M Black but plan to - for now, this one is probably my all around fave in the MM range.

    My Favorite CA MM Cart

I've used the Concept and the Maestro V2 but the Virtuoso is probably my favorite of the CA line on my tube based system. I find it to be warmer and more lush while still having excellent soundstage and dynamics. The Maestro is much more detailed and does track far better but sometimes that level of detail is not an endearing trait. If you love beautiful midrange and are willing to give up a little on tracking ability and intricate detail, the Virtuoso may be your best MM choice. I install it regularly when I want to warm up my sound.

I got this cart as part of the package when I purchased Marantz TT for $1500 produced by Clearaudio. When I checked the price of the needle I was stunned to learn that the cart cost $900. Its a beauty. Great sound. Connected to the McIntosh set of preamp and two monoblocks.

    K Gris Chic.
