Dynavector 10X5 Mk2 Phono Cartridge

24 Reviews

First released in 1978 and recipient of the then-famous CES Design and Engineering Award in 1978 & '81, the current Dynavector 10X5 Mk2 represents a new benchmark in high-output moving-coil cartridge performance that does not require a step-up transformer nor moving-coil phonostage.

The Dynavector 10X5 Mk2 Dons a Shibata III Diamond Stylus

Along with several exclusive Dynavector technologies that include Magnetic Flux Damping, Softened Magnetism (Patent) and powerful neodymium magnets that provide the smooth treble response for which Dynavector is world-renowned. The 10X5 Mk2 also features an improved stylus-assembly with in the nude diamond “Shibata III” line-contact stylus as well as in the improved, hardened cantilever material. These improvements ensure secure tracking ability over even the most torturous of record grooves whilst achieving extended high-frequency response and enhanced musical resolution.

Legendary Dynavector coil-winding technology uses the finest wire, and has enabled Dynavector to minutely increase the coil windings to reduce impedance to 150ohms whilst retaining a hearty 2.8mV of output. Mounting the cartridge to the tonearm is achieved by bolting the rigid, aluminum head-block to the headshell via supplied bolts & key.

Upgraded from a Denon 103R I had recently broken. Wow! I really wish I had purchased this car a long time ago! Surface noise and sibilance are GREATLY improved over the 103R. Bass is nice and tight and even on my small bookshelf Usher S-520's the soundstage is great! Running on my Rega P3-24 to Rega Aria (MC @ 400ohm) to Rega Elex-R. Fantastic!!!

I had this Dynavector matched to a restored Empire 398 and I can only convey what my ears tell me. When I put on my "Forever Changes" album by Love I actually "heard" sounds I had never before known were on the record. I have listened to Forever Changes for about 40 years on various decent set-ups, from Technics in the 70's through Audiotechnica recently, but the record has never sounded like it does now with this Dynavector. This cartridge is the real thing. I can't say if at my age my ears could tell the difference if I moved up another step or two and, frankly, why should I!

This seems to be a winner if you aren't into separate phono pre amps with cartridge loading options.Has the moving coil liquidity and much more enjoyable into a CJ PV10 A or Prima Luna phono section than the Grado Platinum I was using.

This is one great cartridge. Sounds better than the twice-the-price Soundsmith Zephyr it replaced on my VPI Classic. It sounds big, great separation and punch. Deep bass (took about 20 hours) and smooth highs. Tracks very well for me. Highly recommended.

This cartridge is fantastic. It is currently paired with a Sota Comet, and has provided a dramatic improvement over the cartridge it replaced. Fantastic range, and it really shines with blues, jazz, etc. With probably only 100 hours on it, the results so far indicate that you cannot get a better cartridge within this price range.

The Dynavector 10X5 is the most musical and tonally "correct" phono cartridge in the "under $750" price class. The 10X5 has all the strengths of its closest competitor, the Sumiko Blue Point, and adds to them with amazingly textured, layered and harmonically rich midrange that the Blue Point just doesn't do. Add to that the 10X5's STRONG tracking abilities and its unique airy/extended treble, and you have a real winner! The 10X5 is a true Best Buy, it works well on virtually all tonearms, and simply is THE cartridge for audiophiles who don't have $1000 or much more to spend; it REALLY IS that good!

Switched from the 2M Bronze to the 10x5 and right out of the box I couldn't be more pleased. Wow. I can't break from the turntable today and to think it's just going to get better. Love this cart.

I had a nice discussion with Brian and he suggested this cartridge. In a word WOW very pleased. Easy to install and enjoying every minute; can't wait till the break in period is complete

Worth every $ - a spectacular cartridge right out of the box. There is nothing to not like about the 10X5.

Well I thought it was good initially, the I got to reading about thr Zu version and though I might try to epoxy it to a brass headshell mounting plate. What a difference Deeper, more expansive sound stage, superb details that take you into the recording venu , extended bass and tightly controlled bass, just what's required for pipe organ tracks. All-in-all a superb cartridge at three times the price. If I could give it 10 srars I would

I had been using the 20X2 low output until my girlfriend broke the cantilever . So she bought me the 10x5.....I really can't tell much of a difference!! If you want the best bang for your buck...just get the 10x5!!!

Best money (other than the table itself) I've spent on the sound system. Went from a Grado Red to the Dynavector. The difference is night and day. Soundstage is loud and clear. Highs and mids are unbelievable. And the bass has a warmth that I've never had before. This was one of a few upgrades. Add this cart to a Sumiko headshell and it'll become a beast of a tracker. Thanks to Patrick as well for mounting the cart to the Tech for me.

A significant improvement in sound. Tighter, quicker bass, more "presence". Thanks to Patrick for his help!

forgot to say that the cart simply kills all noise i had grado, specialy when close to the motor, now i just kick the output very high and its like been in the studios!

hahahaha i had a grado blue hahahaha now a dynavector 10x5, the sound is so great i just cant stop smiling, its like heaven, hell yeah! haha take care when headshell it and youll be amazed

Thanks for the sales assistance from Brian! We made up my minds to upgrade from a newly purchased Ortofon Blue (hated it) and settled upon the Dynavector. When I started placing the order, Brian about jumped through the phone saying “…I love that cartridge…” I ordered it. He is right, it absolutely made our vinyl music collection come alive. So much, much better than the Blue and our JICO re-stylused Shure V15MR. We have recently been purchasing audiophile records and this is the first time we can truly hear and enjoy them. Thanks to the Needle Doctor team and for the fast delivery!

The Dyna 10x5 is a muscle car. It's Steve McQueen crashing down the San Francisco hills at 90mph, tearing up asphalt, thrilling us every second. This is the best phono cartridge you'll ever want to hear. Period. I had a Dyna 10x5 running on a Sony PS-X75 Biotracer, which is just a battleship. Music was immensely sharp, clear, full of textures and colors - and extremely dynamic. This cart has come to ROCK. Do you want to prove, once and for all, that analog LP is superior to digital CD? Then get the 10x5. The sound is so exciting, so miraculous, so ALIVE. Pair this cart with worthy turntable and a tube phono stage (I recommend the Tube Box II).

A really good match for the Debut III, use the acrylic platter and extra counter weight. Set for 2 gm and use mid anti skating notch. Great on mids and top end.

Outstanding cartridge. Excellent performance all around. Runs circles around my Denon DL160, which is no slouch either. The Dyna 10X5 is very detailed and articulate. Liquid mids and highs simply sparkle. Bass is tight and accurate without being muddy or flabby. Looks great on the Sumiko HS12 headshell also. Mine started to open up at around 50 hours. YMMV. Big thanks to Patrick and Brian for assisting me. Top shelf customer service.

Incredible for the money. Beat the tar out of my much higher priced and better reviewed wood bodied cart. I am buying a second just in case Dyna screws up and changes something with the next model. Buy one NOW!

This cartridge blew me away from the first moment I played a LP with it. The soundstage and resolution is incredible for a cartridge in the price range. Highly recommended. I'll post an update after I have broken it in and added my tubed phono stage. At the moment, it is running into a MM phone preamp without any gain problems or hum.

Fabulous. on my Rega P3, into a custom phono-pre, and VTL preamp, this cartridge simply sings. Though I have not used many cartridges in this system, I've listened to many systems and sources over the years, and this combo makes wonderful music. (mostly used for rock of all sorts, and folk)

I bought this cartridge and put it on an old Technics turntable that I got from a neighbor. Wow! It transformed the turntable into high end ezuipment. Good wide and deep stage, great detail and dynamics-a big, bib, big, step up from the Grado Gold that was on it. This was probably the most bang for the buck I hav gotten on any upgrade. Highly recommended.

I have owned the 10X5 for about a year and a half and am really pleased. I have it mounted to a Project RM-5 and the detail and stereo imaging are spectacular. Sound stage could be deeper but I attribute that to my listening room more than the set-up. I am a rock/acoustic rock and jazz fan and for an MC this one delivers all the edginess and at the same time subtleness you would want from both.
