Ortofon 2M Blue Phono Cartridge
"The sound had the immediacy that I associate with good carts but it also had a sweetness that I’ve experienced with good MCs like a Benz Glider. It had a little Sumiko Blue Point edginess in the upper strings and a stridency from trumpets that may not stand the test of time, but for two and a quarter, there is no arguing the Blue is a cartridge performing well above its price point. When I first heard it, I’d have guessed it was in the $7/800 range." - Audiophilia
Design ElementsThe 2M Series is developed in conjunction with the Danish Industrial designer Møller Jensen Design – the same designer who designed the award winning MC Jubilee and Kontrapunkt series. Inspired by the facets of a diamond, whose contours gracefully trace the grooves on a record’s surface, the 2M’s handsome elegance establishes a great combination of form and functionality.
The name 2M was selected from among several ideas. We wanted a modern name that would be easy to pronounce and remember, and therefore an alphanumerical name was chosen. 2M means MM, which is the abbreviation for moving magnet. Of course the 2M isn’t just another pretty face. It has been engineered to the highest standards and is congruent with Ortofon’s unrelenting commitment to providing the most precise and accurate reproduction possible without coloration.
Ortofon 2M SonicsThe 2M series of cartridges feature Ortofon’s trademark split-pole pins, an invention that enables moving-magnet cartridges to have a flat frequency response, as with a moving-coil cartridge. Split-pole pins were invented by Ortofon, and were originally presented in the 500 and OM Super series. We have optimized the design for ease of mounting the cartridge, and the weight and size to fit the most common turntables on the market today. The 2M Series provides excellent compatibility when used in an assortment of playback systems and with a wide variety of phono preamps.A briefing on each...

Great sound across the range of human hearing

This is one amazing cartrige and it will make a difference in the sounds. Kudos to Brian @ ND, amazing customer service and a guy that TRULY cares about customers. Deal with him directly as I only buy because of him.
originally I listened to my vinyl with a Goldring that came with my Music Hall MMF2.1. going back to vinyl after a five year abscence I decided to upgrade. I could wax poetic over the sudden improvement with the Ortofon but what would you expect. it costs twice as much as the Goldring. I will say this though. I found the sound from the new Ortofon very neutral. to some that may not be desireable. no part of the music in classical, jazz or rock is sacrificed at the expense of another. years ago I listened through high end seperates and a much more expensive TT and seperate AT arm. while it certainly would be impossible to compare the two now, I am satisfied with this cartridge and it's depth and presence. in a more modest setting and equipment.
I don't have much to compare to, but this cartridge is awesome. Using it on my Technics SL-1900 and it sounds great. I'm only about 5 hours into it and it's already sounding like it's set in.
Using this cart on my Rega P5, I am very pleased. I don't think there is a better eliptical cartridge for the money. The break in time was shorter than I expected. After about 10 LP's, it was singing wonderfully.

First time in many years I have had a decent cartridge on an older Denon table (vintage '84). I was quite surprised by the performance at this price point and find myself ignoring my digital library to play one album after another. 5 stars considering excellent value for the money.
I just got this installed on a 1200 MK2. This cart is like a breath of fresh air. It enhances every detail of music with such clarity. I can't wait to see how it sounds after a few hundred hours of play. Thank you Needledoctor!
Just got my 2M Blue today. Very easy to install in Rega arm, and sounds great! VPI HW19 JR turntable, Rega Brio 3 amp, Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 speakers. Very satisfied.

My family purchased a Pro-Ject Audio Wood Classic from Jerry about ten years ago, (still going strong). I have never changed the original cartridge that was on the turn table. I decided to upgrade the cartridge after getting really good reviews from Jerry's staff about the Ortofon. I am glad I listened to their advice because this needle is Fantastic! It is a perfect fit for this turntable and my records have never sounded so good. I don't think I could beat the sound for twice the price of this cartridge. Thanks Needle Doctor Staff!

I forgot to add that I am using a Marantz 6300 turntable. Tracks great, and the details are astonishing. I cannot believe the information I am getting out of the record.

Love this cartridge. In my system it really livened it up. I was using an older Stanton and the difference is amazing. With this cartidge CDs are staying in the cases. I'm now buying more vinyl. Previous reviewers were not wrong, the bottom end is tight. Excellent tracking.

Outstanding cartridge. I highly recommend it. I am a picky audiophile. After trying a few in this price range, this is absolutely the best for my system I tried a grado gold, but the mids where too far in the background for me. I will not knock it, but it was just not for my setup. Nothing is too forward with the Ortofon, just perfect. Nice soundstage and good, stable imaging. Great bass, and nice mids and highs. It just seems to be all perfectly balanced. And it sounds warm too, almost tube like. I really love this cartridge and cannot say enough good about it. Listening was almost intoxicating. Get one! You will not be dissappointed. I have B&W 804 matrix speakers and an aragon 4004 amplifier. Plus, needle dr has been more than a pleasure to work with. And this comes from a guy who never wrote a review before!

I recently installed this catridge on my Linn LP-12 / Ittok and was pleasantly surprised. It's trackng ability is superb and it delivers! OK, so it doesn't have quite the depth of dimension and detail of a good moving-coil, but then again it's only $200. Neverheless, it plays those old Stones, Hendrix and Led Zep albums with plenty of BALLS!

Arguably the king of the $200 phono cartridges. The Ortofon 2M Blue features stunning dynamics, strong bass, highs that are natural and not too bright, and percussion that is absolutely stunning. Pair this with a Technics direct drive for some spectacular results. 2M Blue is neutral, sharply detailed, digs deep for information..."analytic" to a fault. To my ears, this defeats the Dyna 10x5 and the AT440MLa, and seriously rivals Denon's DL-160.

I love it. I've had mine for almost 4 months now and I have over 100 hours on it. Sounds great on my Music Hall MMF 2.2. If you have that turntable, or it's Pro-Ject sibling, make sure you order the heavier weight for the tonearm though.

Excellent cartridge for $199, very tight bass , mid and Highs are nice and clean. presence and soundstage is very good. Running on a musuc hall TT with Rotel rcvr and Klipsch KLF-30, best money i have spent yet.

Excellent cartridge for $199. has made a world of difference on my Music Hall TT, Rotel and Klipsch setup, tight bottom end as previously mentioned, clear crisp mid - high, Highly recommended
After playing around a little with the tracking force on my P3, and finally getting rid of horrid crunching sound in all the mids, this thing works, and work really well. I am now getting some wonderful sound out of this. Would recommend this for a newbie like me who's willing to spend an extra $100 for great sound.

I've had a few cartridge in this price range and a little higher but this out performs them all.Super tracking, nice bottom end with warm mids and crisp highs. It's a perfect match for your Pro-ject,Music Hall or Rega. You can't go wrong with this one.Plus ordering from Needle Doctor your sure to get fast and friendly service.
Great sound for the money.
I installed the 2m Blue on my Project carbon. I was needing a new stylus and decided to get the 2m blue hoping it would improve the sound. I couldn't believe how much better it sounded. I had the Ortofon 2m Red so I only had to buy the replacement stylus. Very happy with purchase.
A shocking value
I bought a 2m red on Amazon for $100 as a backup for my $2500 Lyra Helikon (which I have really love'd) while preparing to get it re-tipped with a new ruby cantilever and contact line diamond. I own a VPI Scout Classic Signature which is essentually a Classic 3. I didn't expect too much from the red but I was shocked, so much so that I sold the Helikon for repair saving the $400 re-tip. I then read some great things about the red vs blue which led me to upgrade to the blue. It's really difficult for me to believe that, to my ears, this cartridge at least equals and in some areas surpasses the Helikon. I never thought I'd ever use a mm cartridge again but with this sound, the high cost of re-tipping and long turnaround, I'm back. I may eventually climb up the 2m ladder but for now, the blue is right for me and the stylus replacement is at the perfect price point.
Don't hesitate just do it!
Upgraded a 2m red with the blue. One of the biggest out-of-the-box changes I have ever done. Amazing detail and range. Also more forgiving thean the red was on well played albums. Can't recommend enough.
