Orofon's Unique 2M Design The Ortofon 2M magnetic cartridge system is designed and developed for high performance reproduction of your favorite analogue records.Ortofon has developed magnetic cartridges in various designs for many types of record players, tone arms and for special purposes throughout the last 40 years. And now - as we approach Ortofon´s 90 years Company Anniversary - we decided to combine our expertise and latest technology in the development of this outstanding cartridge design. As a result of reviewer listening tests we feel confident that you will appreciate and enjoy the unique qualities of these cartridges. 2M is developed together with the Danish designer "MøllerJensen Design" from Copenhagen, Denmark - the same designer who designed the award winning cartridge MC Jubilee and the Kontrapunkt series. The inspiration for designing the 2M was related to the facets of the diamond - elegantly concentrating its contours against the grooves on the record surface. The name 2M was selected among several ideas. We wanted a modernname which should be easy to pronounce and to remember, and therefore an alpha numerical name was chosen. 2M means MM, which is the abbreviation for moving magnet. We are using the same names on our 2M series as we use at our Rondo series: Red, Blue and Bronze. The 2M Black will become the flagship of 2M. 2M was the last product of our former chief engineer Per Windfield. He has worked with the 2M for the last two years. The 2M Technology 2M are designed for precise and accurate retrieval of the information in the record groove. Our philosophy is to play the record sound as accurate as possible, without coloring the sound. We have optimized the design for ease of mounting the cartridge, weight and size to fit the most common turntables at the market today. All of the 2M cartridges feature diamonds which are polished to the highest standards in the industry. The 2M Red features a tipped elliptical diamond, while the 2M Blue features a nude elliptical diamond. The 2M Bronze features a nude Fine Line diamond stylus, which is particularly suited for demanding applications. The slim profile of the Fine Line stylus will track even the highest frequency information, making it a must for discerning listeners. Additionally, its larger footprint ensures reduced distortion and record wear. The 2M Black is the new moving magnet flagship from Ortofon. The 2M black is graced with a Shibata diamond stylus - the same diamond as on the acclaimed MC Jubilee. Its slim, highly polished profile allows an exceedingly wide contact area to the groove walls and ensures notably detailed reproduction throughout the spectrum, including even the most high frequency groove information. The 2M series has interchangeable stylus units and replacement stylus is available. To obtain a flat frequency response as with a Moving Coil cartridge we are using the slit pole pins to reduce the eddy current. The slit pole pins is an Ortofon invention which was presented in the 500 series and the Super OM series. The 2M Red and 2M Blue both have the same engine with slit pole pins. With this improved engine we have been able to increase to output to 5,5 mV. The cartridge body used for the 2M Bronze and 2M Black is manufactured from a newly-developed Noryl plastic/glass combination, a revolutionary material which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances. The 2M Bronze and 2M Black use a special upgraded engine, featuring split pole pins with a silver plated copper wire. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, right? I always considered the OM cartridges to be solid all-around performers; transparent, accurate, offenseless. The OM30 was actually one of my favorite entry-level audiophile cartridges. The 2M Bronze is the model that essentially nudged the OM30 out of existence (both rank the same in their respective series with their nude Fine Line styli), so in my fury, I decided to investigate just how good it is. I expected it to be an over-priced, over-hyped, slightly souped-up version of my darling OM30. I wanted so bad to be right. I was wrong. Wrong again. Though the tip is the same as the OM30’s, the Bronze uses a new engine design, silver-plated copper wiring in its coils, and an upgraded stylus housing. These tweaks amount to a drastic improvement over the already-lovely OM30. The Bronze is more quiet and clear, more expansive, and simply more exciting. Leo Kottke’s 12-string twangs like it was meant to. The subtleties of his picking spring forward and are readily available to the listener, and the sound generated by the body is rich and inviting. The Bronze also has a keen sense of space. Instruments are seated in their intended positions in the stereo image, in terms of both depth and width. Drums are fast but not punchy, cymbals are delicate and sweet. It breezed through the complicated passages of Yes’ “Close to the Edge” with unwavering clarity and dynamic slam. Vocals were present and lifelike, bass was huge and deep but controlled. As much as I hate to see the OM30 replaced, I commend Ortofon for doing it proud by offering a worthwhile and fairly priced refinement.
