Ortofon Cadenza Red MC Phono Cartridge
A little background info...Cadenza (from Italian: meaning cadence) refers to a portion of a concerto in which the orchestra stops playing, leaving the soloist to play alone in free time, without a strict, regular pulse. A cadenza can be written or improvised. It’s usually the most elaborate and virtuosic part that the solo instrument plays during the whole piece. At the end of the cadenza, the orchestra re-enters, and generally finishes off the movement. During the 19th century, composers began to write cadenzas out in full. Others wrote cadenzas for works, where the composer had intended for the solo to be improvised, in order for the soloist to have a well formed solo that they could practice in advance. Some of these have become so widely played and sung that they are effectively a part of the standard repertoire.
Cadenza Red DetailsThe Red model is using a nude fine line stylus with a cylindrical aluminium cantilever. The stylus tip radius is r/R 8/40 μm. The coils are made from 6NX (99.9999 %) pure silver wire. An improved winding process on the armature allows a better channel balance. The sound picture of Cadenza Red is more relaxed, homogeneous and moderately dynamic in the perspective compared to the Cadenza Blue and have great space and depth in the stereo image.

This is my first cartridge from Ortofon (others Delos and OC9) Pros: Here comes a very naturally balanced instrument that reveals complex harmonics with neutral balance and tonal detail. I am hearing accompanying instruments with such distinction that I was hardly aware of them before. And oh boy does this cartridge throw a terrific 3D soundstage. Significantly, the strong output signal makes this a good choice for MC head amps with limited gain. Cons: This is a heavy cartridge. Make sure your tonearm can handle the total weight of the cartridge and your headshell combination. My SME and Micro Seiki were approaching their limits of counterbalance. Tracking force is a little on the high side so it will stay in the groove where other needles may bounce. I must say that I feel having a MC preamp with adjustable loading should be emphasized here. I had some fuzzyness at very high frequencies loaded to 100 ohms that vanished when I changed loading to 50 ohms. Conclusions: Considering price, the Red may give you all you need from the Cadenza series and not leave you wanting more. Recommend to a friend: Yes
