New Tonearm Innovations

As we await the impending arrival of the Pro-Ject Classic, we'd like to first discuss the things we already know about it. Pro-Ject arms have become something of an industry standard for reasonably priced, audiophile-friendly, and appropriately reputable tonearms. The Classic's modified 9cc is no exception, in fact its innovations are entirely new to our current understanding of Pro-Ject arms. It's a one-piece 9" conical carbon/aluminum sandwich-style armtube with a high-precision Japanese ball bearing, completely isolated arm cabling for zero-resistance pivoting, Zicron bearing system (top and side Cardan bearings), and a new, dampened counterweight utilizing a TPE damping pad designed by Ortofon. From this, we can expect the same degree of performance we already expect from a Pro-Ject arm, and then much more.

A New-Old Design

As with the arm, the construction of the 'table itself is a combination of existing technology and new innovations. The TPE-dampened milled-aluminum platter is both massive and acoustically dead. The hardened, polished spindle with a brass bearing in Teflon plating yields nearly zero-friction rotation of the platter, and the new floating-chassis construction (6-piece TPE ball-suspension between main chassis and aluminum/MDF sandwich-style top plate) promises heightened isolation and a punitive noise-floor. The felt-dampened, adjustable isolation feet are as effective as any in this class of turntable. The Classic is undeniably gorgeous, and clearly mimics the appeal of classic turntables from Linn and AR from the 50s and 60s. With the no-frills, all-audiophile implementations, this table will sound as good as it looks, and better still. It will leave the many Linn and AR faithfuls contemplating what they're missing, so get on board stat!
